There is an interesting extra dimension to add here.

Watching my dad die I was curious whether he would take ownership of the many disastrous decisions he had made in his life that badly affected our development as children. He didn't.

The past simply held no value to him. For the dying, past is done and over with. That's it. It only has a temporal value to the living.

I found that emotionally understanding this was strangely liberating. I can do whatever I like in life and at the end, simply close the door. Wow.
