The need for black-white thinking, perfect and mono solutions define the weak engineer. A strong understanding and can handle hybridity, dynamic change and imperfection.
Hybridity, renewables will come in multiple forms and across multiple scales all at once. So be on the lookout for exponential build-up (and hick-ups:) on the way.
Change will also come in many forms across the whole spectrum of human endeavour. From radical efficiencies (partly also AI lead) to radical new production methods like those coming from bio-engineering (like fuels and cement). And let's not forget us, our behavioural changes like more remote working.
Imperfection requires a growth mindset to overcome whatever blocks the road and will trigger our huge potential for innovation. To think and work in parallel solutions. But it also will stress test our resilience. 3rd world countries will have an advantage here.
So if we really want we can work our way out of fossil fuels.
ps the offshore potential of the North Sea for wind energy is tremendous. 10% of that potential can now already cover the whole of the EU's current electricity demands, leaving 90% room for growth.
