The dogma of density belongs very much to the era of cheap and abundant fossil fuels. The invention of high-rise even coincides perfectly and are notoriously energy inefficient.

Beyond fossil fuel, my guess is that our new socio-ecological based economies will be organised around watersheds and bio-regions in far smarter densites. Back to the future.
