Patterns, especially fractal-based ones, radically reduce the information load. (see Shannon’s information theory and Gatlin on life). Information costs energy. So it's a smart way to create multiple levels of complexity at minimal costs.

A nice example is its use of geometry creation (like on butterfly wings) which interacts with the waves of light to create colors.
