Might want to look at the energy spike that got us here. A one-time inheritance we've spent up rapidly to procreate and have now reached historically unprecedented numbers. Way beyond land-carrying capacity.

So the intuitive feeling many have that we are now rapidly reaching the end of the resource-population Ponzi scheme is not unjustified.
The downhill is extremely steep...probably steeper, meaning much faster than most societies can properly adjust to. Only very few societies have the internal discipline to redistribute and allocate resources effectively. The Scandinavian countries, Japan, and perhaps China and Korea. To bring their populations back to carrying capacity equilibrium without devastating social revolt.
The West will, as usual, first try and coerce the resources of other countries (aka steal), but will be met with rising global resistance. (like we are already seeing now, the West being kicked out of Africa, etc) At some point, out of sheer desperation and a misplaced superiority complex (just like "Great" Britain), after a civil war has installed a totalitarian government, the US will use its nuclear arsenal. (and receive a reply).
