Do you mean the killing of nearly 1.000.000 in the Iraq region and displacement of 38 mln as a result of the illegal invasion and devastation by the US and her enablers*? The body count of US aggression since the ending of WOII is in the tens of millions....** Is that your idea of "moved on to modern standards"?

And as for not dealing with the past, might want to also ask your Ukrainian friends about the massacres of Poles in Volhynia***. And why did they, in 2016, forbade the screening of the film Wolyn**** in all of Ukraine? The Germans of today would never do such a thing because they know what censorship does to a nation.

Censorship that btw Ukraine is enforcing on her own people today by gagging all opposition against the Ukraine government. It would be very interesting to see if free and honest elections were held whether Zelenski still would be elected or that also the Ukrainians are more than fed up with his US-proxy war killing all their men. Would they prefer peace over US cluster bombs? The fact that they don't even get to make this free choice should worry every decent human being on this planet.
