"by definition, a “collapse” is sudden"

Sudden is often associated with speed, fast, but the essence it is actually conveying is "unexpected".

Small, gradual unnoticed changes can over time aggregate and at a certain point become noticeable as a significant shift away from a former (the expected) state.

Its use here is therefore correct.
