All the offset-links are funding projects far away in countries where there is little or no control over the future of these offsets. So I too am very septical about their effectiveness. But I would like to add one point to the discussion.
Why not use those offset-funds locally?
It is terribly difficult for farmers in Western countries to switch over to more sustainable methods like regenerative farming. The banks refuse to finance it and the regenerative process takes time (3-5 years) to kick in properly. No farmer can survive that.
Offset capital could change this equation near your own home town. You can see and live in the change you helped fund with better air quality and healthier foods as a bonus.
